A History of Climate Scares at the New York Times: 1978, “No End in Sight to 30-Year Cooling Trend; ” 1988, “Global Warming has Begun”

[This article was originally posted over at electroverse.net on May 12, 2021]

NASA’s James Hansen started the global warming scare during the very hot summer of 1988.

The New York Times reported the following on June 24, 1988:

Until now, scientists have been cautious about attributing rising global temperatures of recent years to the predicted global warming caused by pollutants in the atmosphere, known as the ”greenhouse effect.”

But today Dr. James E. Hansen of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration told a Congressional committee that it was 99 percent certain that the warming trend was not a natural variation but was caused by a buildup of carbon dioxide and other artificial gases in the atmosphere.

But what credibility can the New York Times have left?

For decades prior, the publication was scaremongering about the opposite climatic catastrophe: Global Cooling.

Below is an article from 1961, where the NYT is bracing citizens of the U.S. for a colder world:

The global scientific consensus back in 1961 was that the world “is getting colder”.

And by the following decade, the rhetoric had been ramped-up.

At the start of the 1970s, the NYT ran with this front page story:

Scientists at the time were worried about expanding polar ice.

So much so in fact, that the article proposes drastic measures to combat the cooling polar regions — one being to spread coal dust over the Arctic in order to melt the ice.

By the end of the 70s, rather than acknowledging they had perhaps gone a tad overboard, the publication doubled-down on its catastrophic cooling narrative:

The cooling trend between the 1960s and late 1970s was indeed very real–despite what today’s MSM is currently trying to sell you (their own publications were reporting on it for crikey-sake!).

The thermometer data of the time (shown below) reveals that between 1885-1940 the Northern Hemisphere experienced stark warming; and then from 1941-1970 (in actual fact, to 1980) suffered substantial cooling.

These temperature changes were obviously natural, driven by forcings such as solar activity and ocean currents.

There can be absolutely no attribution to atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, which we’re reliably told have been steadily rising since the late 1800s.

Clear for all to see, the above chart shows a strong anti-correlation from 1941-1970 when CO2 levels were rising exponentially yet average temperatures were falling off a cliff.

The likes of NOAA and NASA have since erased these natural waxings and wanings from the temperature records.

This is exposed here:

Natural climate variations have been used to control populations and sell newspapers for a century+. Let us hope that this repeated ‘crying wolf’ doesn’t come back to bite us when a genuine climatic threat arises.

NASA’s James Hansen is regarded as ‘the father’ of the modern global warming scare–that is, the 1980-to-present warming, not the 1885-1940 warming. However, today’s climatic scare, unlike the ones preceding it, has a far more sinister twist.

Today, rising carbon dioxide levels –and so every human on the planet– is being blamed for the destruction of planet Earth. This is brilliant in its maleficence, but will also be judged by history as the greatest fraud ever perpetuated on our species.

When devising his now infamous temperature forecast from 1988, Hansen came-up with three CO2 emissions scenarios.

Scenario A was based on increasing CO2 emission growth rates, or “Business As Usual.”

Scenario B was based on a reduction (moderate) of CO2 emission growth rates.

And Scenario C was based on CO2 emissions being reduced (capped) to year 2000 levels.

You can see for yourself which scenario Hansen nailed.

Temps have almost perfectly tracked Scenario C: “GHG/CO2 reduced to year 2000 levels.”

Think of all those costly carbon initiatives that have been rolled-out around the world since 1988, when we could have done nothing and achieved the same results.

Here’s Hansen’s original graph overlaid with the satellite lower troposphere reading in red (Tony Heller):

Hansen testified to congress indicating that we would be 1.5C above baseline by early 2020.

But real-world satellite observations had us at around 0.5C above baseline in early 2020.

And since then, the average global temperature has actually plummeted to -0.05C BELOW baseline:

Hansen was flat out wrong.

What an expensive and wholly-exhausting waste of time “global warming” turned out to be.

Climate is cyclic, never linear — the next epoch due is one of COOLING, and no amount of cow farts will avert it.

The COLD TIMES are returning, the mid-latitudes are REFREEZING in line with historically low solar activitycloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow (among many other forcings, including the impending release of the Beaufort Gyre).

Prepare accordingly — learn the facts, relocate if need be, and grow your own.

Social Media channels are restricting Electroverse’s reach: Twitter are purging followers, while Facebook are labeling posts as “false” and have slapped-on crippling page restrictions. And most recently, the CCDH stripped the website of its ability to advertise with Google.

Thank you Cap, short, sweet & concise, irrefutable summary.
    Even Greenies will understand it.

Every summer there is a loud chorus of greenies braying about global warming. Unfortunately with the mid term election outcome looking bleak, the mad man across the water wants to declare a climate emergency and dictatorial powers. The heat wave goes political. Does real global warming start in mid July & end in mid August?

  3. Dallas Schneider

According to my records this last 8 days in July was the warmest of the year.

Now Science of the 1800s seemed to expand mankind’s knowledge,
or was it really engineering of the physical universe that really helped.

Today’s “Science” seems so confused with their interest introverted into
the lifespan of an Antarctica mollusk for instance it is embarrassing to be called a “Scientist” as it stands for nothing but bowing to the paycheck.

And human engineering cannot be said to be advancing us either. The transistor was the last great invention in Dec 1947 (my first Birthday present).
The remainder of the time it seems we have been riding on the coattails
of captured alien technology reversed engineered.

So let’s see how we handle this oncoming series of winters without summers
    NOW!

Why don’t people like Roy Spencer publish a different graph ?

Anomaly graphs look impressive but onlookers see only the ever upward trend.

Some years ago I downloaded 2 data sets from Australia’s BOM – an alarmist organisation if ever there was one.

I used Microsoft Excel to plot the anomaly graphs – 2011 and 2018 version – which mimic the “official” versions.

There were many differences however – how the past keeps changing in temperature is surely an area of study worth grants ?

But simply adding 14°C to all of the anomaly values and setting the scale to real world temperatures – say 0 to 25°C – and the result is basically a flat line with a mild vertical inclination that only an idiot could be worried about.

    These people are shameless !

The graphs Roy Spencer puts out are not intentional deception they are coincidence. The satellite era began when we were in a deep minimum. In 1977 it snowed in Miami of Florida. Something they said would never happen. From that point until 2014 the temperature did rise. At first glance that is all you see. The average temperature is now falling.

Cap et alia – I have been working on understanding how Radiant Heat actually operates for some time now. The original Master of such studies was James Clerk Maxwell of Scotland. His definitive “Theory of Heat”was 1st Published in the 1860’s. Page 232 holds the secrets: Radiant Heat is a form of Light and acts as one. Invisible to us because we evolved with no eye cells to ‘read’ it
Most pertinently, his experiments proved it passes unaffected through clear Gases, in a straight line. Just like any other frequency of Light Waves, including eg red and blue. CO2 and Methane are not heated either, nor any other gas.

Gases have other specific traits too, as do other forms of matter……..That is Physics as opposed to what we get which is faked guesswork Only proper experimentation can find the truth and yes, it has been done just not afforded proper exposure against all those liars with agendas….. .

The”Theory of Heat” was reprinted by Amazon at a reasonable price. Along with Maxwell’s other books. They are mighty weapons! BRETT KEANE, NEW ZEALAND

hi Cap, is it possible to program your site in a way that the graphs will open in a new tab? Would make reading much more easy and I would not close the complete site just because I forgot that the graph I am looking on is the same site. Also very anoying to reload the site after every graph, thanks Kathrin, your quase neighbour from Sao Luis

Again I have to report another coolish day for Saturday here in Northern England, with some summer rain. I checked the soil and it had gone down over two inches or 5cm, which isn’t bad after our glourious heatwave, enough to water any food you may be growing. It looks like Sunday will be warm 21C/71F but with more rain(maybe, as this is England and the only forcast you can trust is to stick your nose out of the door) Looks cooler for Monday but the point is, we are not boiling away(maybe next week lol) as they all keep implying…… With what looks like three la niñas on the trot and a bonkers volcano going bang, winter could be interesting……
