Greenland Climate Scientist Dies During Record-Breaking Snow/Ice Gains

Konrad Steffen was one of the world’s leading voices on global warming. I would regularly run into his research, and although I didn’t agree with the majority of his conclusions, the man’s dedication to his work was admirable.
Steffen, the Director of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research, died at the age of 68 on Saturday (Aug 8). He worked on global warming for more than 40 years, focusing on its impacts on the Arctic and Antarctic, reads an official statement.
Steffen’s decades-long research in Greenland “confirmed that global warming is causing Greenland’s ice sheet to melt with increasing speed,” reports the NYT.
However, what the NYT article fails to point out is that Steffen’s tragic death occurred during Greenland’s ongoing recording-smashing snow/ice gains.
Police investigators said Steffen had fallen into a crevasse in the ice and drowned in the deep water below. However, the crevasse was a known hazard to Steffen, located not far from his outpost, and as fellow scientist at the station, Jason Box, pointed out: high winds and record summer snowfall had made visibility poor and landmarks harder to spot.
Dr. Steffen built his Greenland outpost in 1990, and over time he made it a destination for journalists and political leaders, providing them with a “front row seat to climate change”.
One visitor, former VP Al Gore, posted a tweet on Monday stating that “Koni’s renowned work as a glaciologist has been instrumental in the world’s deepened understanding of the climate crisis.”
Dr. Steffen believed the accumulating risks of climate change had not yet sunk in with the public. If people hear projections that warming will increase by two degrees by the year 2100, he said, they might dismiss it, saying ‘two degrees is not so bad.’
But that is only the start, he warned: “Sorry,” he said. “It won’t stop there. The melting won’t stop there. The curve gets steeper and steeper.”

The Greenland ice sheet should ordinarily be LOSING 4 gigatons a day in mid-August, but instead it’s currently GAINING never-before-seen volumes of snow/ice–accelerating the trend of growth witnessed over recent years.
Denmark’s Polar Portal called it “unseasonally snowy weather” and that “an increase in surface mass balance of 4 gigatons is extreme for the season.”
Since mid-July, the sheet has been recording well-below-average melt, and since the beginning of August it has GAINED mass (approximately 13 gigatons since Aug 10!) — unheard of in summer; and as Jason Box pointed out, this exceptionally snowy event likely attributed to Steffan’s tragic death.
The COLD TIMES are returning, the mid-latitudes are REFREEZING in line with historically low solar activity, cloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow (among many other forcings, including the impending release of the Beaufort Gyre).
Social Media channels are restricting Electroverse’s reach: Twitter are purging followers, while Facebook are labeling posts as “false” and have slapped-on crippling page restrictions. And most recently, the CCDH stripped the website of its ability to advertise with Google.

One has to wonder if this year’s unprecedented ice gain was changing his stance on AGW. The people who are pushing it are ruthless. If not, it’s quite a coincidence.
Either way, this is usually how old paradigms die off, one adherent at a time. Most people are not inclined to change their minds, once made up, no matter how much evidence to the contrary is presented.

i think you whould rewrite your sentence “his committent to the AGW scam was phenomenal”. This man had to know that weather/climate is cyclical. When do the ice cores show a warming trend that doesn’t stop. I say he was charlatan
It’s hard to tell, you would have to see the person in an interview to get a vibe. Michael Man for example is an obvious shill willingly lying. The fact that he went out an a blizzard to prove global warming is hilarious and hints he actually believed it.
Not clear to everyone that this is a 2020 article. Still, then there was a mass gain and now the SMB is well above average (1981-2010 mean).

Thanks for the information FYI, I’m following that conflict very closely too and Alexander Mercouris (YT) has been predicting a great Russian offensive too anytime soon. I really expect that absurd conflict between two nations with such strong cultural and historical ties like RU and UA are, may end soon and the comedian that presides UA be replaced by a real (non neo-Nazi) political leader. I pray to God that this great RU offensive will not bring further escalation of the conflict, and some people are saying it will because present Washington and London leadership won’t accept a defeat for the Russians.
All this is so sad.

Your kindness and and respect is quite refreshing and much appreciated, it would move the science forward much better if we treat each other decently. I agree that CO2 is not the control on the climate, and that the climate is cyclical but it gets old having to be called every name in the book for disagreeing.
I lecture people all the time about CO2… The term “timberline “ exists and trees don’t grow above that elevation for a reason!! There isn’t enough CO2 in the atmosphere at that elevation to support any tree life!!! Right??? So how does CO2 rise above that elevation and form a greenhouse blanket??…. hmmmm.. being the heaviest of the atmospheric elements it doesn’t rise. In perfect still conditions it forms the bottom layer in a tube of air … Soooo.. 78% N, 21% O2, 0.9% Argon…. that’s only 450ppm left…. People have to do some critical thinking on their own instead of following the Marxist narrative…
